Using Incentives & Rebates to Insulate Your Home in 2024 blog header image
April 17, 2024

The solution for an uncomfortable home that costs an arm and a leg to heat and cool is often to improve its efficiency by insulating and professionally air sealing it. But the upfront costs can be intimidating or even prohibitive here in Vermont.

Thankfully, there are rebates available for energy efficient home improvements, including cellulose insulation, spray foam insulation, air sealing, and more. Before you get started on your efficiency and sustainability home upgrades, here is what you’ll need to know about the insulation rebates programs in our service area.

Home Performance with ENERGY STAR

Efficiency Vermont, in collaboration with Home Performance with ENERGY STAR, is offering a rebate initiative for residents of Vermont and New Hampshire. The primary goal of this program is to encourage homeowners to upgrade their homes with energy-efficient insulation and air sealing.

By participating in this program, homeowners can receive up to 75% of their project costs back, capped at $4,000. For income qualified households, this cap extends up to $9,500.

Eligibility and Process

To benefit from this program, the process begins with scheduling a site visit with Vermont Foam Insulation. Then, you will schedule an audit test-in with an independent, third-party auditor to ensure your eligibility for rebates. A home audit must be conducted to get a clear picture of your home's current insulation and air sealing status.

Following the assessment, our team schedules a time to come insulate and air seal your home. After the upgrades are complete, a final assessment is conducted to ensure that the installation meets the program standards. Once this is verified, homeowners are eligible to receive the rebate.

The Benefits of Upgrading Your Insulation

Upgrading your home's insulation is not just about adhering to standards or receiving rebates. It is an investment in your home’s comfort and energy efficiency. It's important to insulate a home in areas that are most prone to energy loss, like the attic, the crawl space, where we often find a house to be unfinished and under-insulated. It is also where we can make the greatest gains and at the least cost. Finished walls are almost always secondary when it comes to efficiency gains. You will notice the effect of your new insulation and air sealed home in the following ways:

  • Reduced Energy Bills

One of the most tangible benefits of upgrading your insulation and air sealing is the reduction in energy bills. Proper insulation helps in maintaining a consistent temperature within your home, reducing the need for excessive heating or cooling. This directly translates into lower energy consumption and, consequently, reduced energy bills.

  • Stable Indoor Temperatures

Upgraded insulation contributes significantly to the overall stability of the temperatures in your home. This means your home stays warmer during the cold Vermont winters and cooler during the summer months.

  • Fewer Indoor Drafts

With fewer air leaks and more consistent indoor temperatures, you will feel fewer drafts throughout your home. Basement or crawl space insulation upgrades also often result in a reduction in cold floors in the morning!

Insulation Tax Credits

The Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 introduced tax credits to make energy-efficient home upgrades more affordable for homeowners in Vermont and New Hampshire. With the Energy Efficient Home Improvement Tax Credit, you can save up to 30% on costs of energy audits, and insulation and air sealing materials, up to a $1,200 annual limit. To benefit, homeowners should file IRS Form 5695 with their tax returns.

How to Take Advantage of Insulation and Air Sealing Incentives
